Solar Energy FAQs

How can I make my home more energy efficient?

There are many simple things you can do to convert your house into an energy efficient location. You can promote natural air circulation by opening windows instead of using a built in heating or cooling system.  You can also use windows as your source of light during the day instead of using electricity.  Darker colors contain heat better then lighter colors so to promote natural heat conduction in your home you can paint walls adjacent to windows darker colors.  You can also purchase appliances that use far less energy than traditional appliances.  If you are looking to convert to full energy efficiency you can purchase solar panels to provide energy to your home.  Doing all of these things will not only save you money in the long run, they will also benefit our environment.

What are the different types of solar panels?

There are three types of solar panels that are available and each are constructed for different methods of use.  Monocrystalline panels are made from large pieces of silicon shaped like crystal.  This panel is the most effective type in absorbing light from the sun and converting it to electricity.  They are also the most expensive type of panel.  They are usually purchased to power large amounts of energy  in communities or business’, however, smaller models can be purchased for smaller use.  Polycrystalline panels are the most common type of panels on the market.  They resemble shattered glass and absorb light through the multiple refractions it creates.  They are slightly less efficient then monocrystalline, however, they are also less expensive.  Instead of one large silicon crystal this model uses many small ones.  Amorphous panels are made of a thin film that is made from silicon and spread across large plates of stainless steel.  They have lower efficiency then the other two types and are the cheapest to produce.  The advantage of amorphous panels is that they are shadow protected which means that the panel will still charge if part of it is a shadow.

What is renewable energy?

Energy that is generated from the sun, wind, tides, and geothermal heat is considered renewable energy.  Because this energy comes from the earth’s natural resources it will never run out and it is an excellent resource for powering many things.  Most renewable power is produced large-scale, however, there are some minor applications un rural areas or even single homes.  The market for renewable power is growing rapidly as we continue to use up the non-renewable resources on earth to provide us with energy.  Climate change, high oil prices, and lessened availability to oil and other resources has led to increased government support for renewable power.
